Let us also consider a passage from Mark 9, in which the Lord Jesus Christ talks about Gehenna, or hell. Turn with me there, or tap there, and let's consider verses 43 through 49. Jesus states: “And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ For everyone will be salted with fire” (ESV). So, here again in verses 43 and 47 Jesus refers to hell in the Greek as Gehenna, the Jerusalem trash dump (see ESV footnote on the verse). But let us also note that Jesus said that hell is the “unquenchable fire.” So, hell is permanent for the individual who goes there, and there is no relief there. The fire that torments people lasts forever; it never goes out. He also noted about hell that for people, “their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’”
