Churches will often help the community in which they reside with different things. People go down and feed the homeless, visit the elderly, and show care for orphans and widows. Here are some things Jesus said about kindness: “For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.” Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea” (Mark 9:41, 42, ESV). So God does want us to help our fellow church members, and he wants us to lead people in the right direction, to be kind. I would say though, and advise, that it is good for us not to become legalistic about our kindness toward others. We should do things for others because we really want to, not because we feel that we have to. If I do something for someone else because I feel I have to, I am not doing it with a right ‘heart’ attitude, and therefore I am doing it out of obligation or to stay true to keeping a rule.
